The coffee is barely poured when your phone lights up. It is a text from the friend who covered your half of the concert tickets last month, a gentle 'no rush' that somehow makes it worse. You have the money. It is sitting right there in your account. And still the easy thing, the almost automatic thing, is to tell yourself you will send it later. Scripture steps right into that small delay and gives it a name.
Withhold not good from them to whom it is due, when it is in the power of thine hand to do it. Say not unto thy neighbour, Go, and come again, and to morrow I will give; when thou hast it by thee.
Read what God is actually asking here. This is not about giving away money you do not have. It is about money you do have, owed to someone who has already earned it. Look at the condition He sets. When it is in the power of thine hand to do it. If you are able, and the person is due, the instruction is plain. Do not send them off to come back tomorrow for what is theirs today.
Notice what the verse does not say. It does not tell you to pay debts you cannot cover, or to say yes to every request that comes your way. It does not call borrowing itself a sin. What it names is a specific and very common habit. We hold back what already belongs to another person simply because the delay is comfortable for us. The money is theirs by right of work or agreement. Sitting on it is a quiet way of keeping what we were meant to release.
Put a real situation on it. Say the neighbor's teenager mowed your lawn for 40 dollars, and you wave him off with a promise to get to it next weekend. To you it is a small errand you will remember eventually. To him, that 40 dollars may be the whole reason he worked in the July heat. Or think of a 250 dollar invoice to the mechanic who fixed your brakes. You have the funds sitting in checking today. Every week you let it ride, you are holding money that is not really yours, and you may be pinching someone who has his own bills due on Friday. The delay costs you nothing and costs them real peace.
There is freedom on the other side of paying promptly. When what you owe is settled the moment you are able, your bank account and your conscience finally tell the same story. You stop carrying that mental list of people you are quietly avoiding at church or across the street. You become someone whose word means paid, not paid eventually. God cares about how we treat the ones who serve us, and He hears the worker who is still waiting on money he already earned.
So do not let the power of thine hand slip past you today. If you can pay, pay.
